Maximizing the off the shelf value - adding an integrated forum module

Post by davout »

As a relative newcomer to CMS-M-S I am very impressed by the breadth and power of the application.

Yet when you look at the general mix of components required for web site assembly/contruction, there is one very obvious piece missing from the CMS-M-S mix, namely a forum/discussion board module. Something that is integrated and fully installed as part of the main line functionality.

Looking at your roadmap, there doesn't seem to be any mention of this.  I would suggest that this a major gap you need to plug ASAP.

Yep, and I've just downloaded this via the module manager, but I think this misses my point.

I'm assuming that a huge part of this product's value lies in its "out-of-the-box" integration of standard web site components.  Tihis means having things like a good forum capability ads part of the core functionality - suitably integrated for single sign on etc.

Also I'd like to see a higher level user interface for setting some of these components into the web content. Like having a web content page auto created to display the top level forums page

The point of CMSMS is to keep it simple. Adding a Forum, by default, goes against the philosophy of the developers. Not everyone wants a forum for their site, so adding this component would add additional, unnecessary code to the base.

The additional functionality can easily be included via modules.

I, for one, do not want the core of CMSMS to include everything under the sun.

I agree that a Forum should not be part of the core install.  I have never created a site that needed a forum, and if it came pre-installed with CMSMS, I'd just have to uninstall it.
