problem displaying calendar

I'm testing out the calendar module and having problems getting it to display properly in the calendar view. It draws the calendar but the first problem is it's not square, it's taller than it is wide. That's not a big deal if I can't fix it, but the other problem is that the days of the week aren't spaced evenly, Thursday and Sunday are about twice as wide as the other days of the week....

Any advice on how to get this to look good?
