Different colored menu buttons

Hey, does anyone know how to make different colored menu buttons? On my old site, I had each of the top-level menu buttons a different color, and I kind of miss that. I used a CSS unordered list, but gave individual #id's to each button. I'm not sure how to do this with an automatically generated menu...

Any ideas?
