Weird characters in content after running upgrade script

Hello,

I just upgraded to the latest version of CMSMS and everything went great, except....

A lot of my content has strange characters thrown in here and there.  I imported my backup DB (from before the upgrade) with all the latest CMSMS files still there and the site actually seemed to work great, without weird characters.  But then I thought I should probably run the upgrade script again, just in case it has to do something to the DB.  So I ran it again, and sure enough, it brought back the weird characters.

Anyone else run into this?  Is it ok if I don't run the upgrade script (or maybe just the last step of the upgrade script) and just use the upgraded files?
