database driver not found on install butt mysql 5.0 IS installed

I get a database driver not found error during install but I have installed mysql 5.0.

Tried mysql 5.1 and the new beta 5.4 but the error stays the same.

The problem began after trying to upgrade from cmsms 1.6.2 to 1.6.5 dunno what went wrong but it seems I am missing tables ?? although I have completely re copied all files and database and cmsms version I still had a non working version.

I have lost years of work and our complete gedcom is on the server ( I found backups so restoring would be possible if only i got this stuff working again.

Is this a local server?
What version of PHP?
Can you not copy your backups back to the server and restore the db?

More info is needed about the hosting context : OS, settings, PHPinfo, way to access the db...
