Hi there
I am about to build my first site in CMS. At this stage the name of the site hasn't been decided (third party) but I would like to start using CMS to get familiar with it and work out what I need.
What I would like to know is if I install CMS on a spare domain so that I can "practice", can I then back up the site and restore it on the new domain, or would I need to re-create it on the new domain.
Thanks

Have a look at the sitepusher module.

Brilliant!
I think I am going to love CMSMS.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Can I change Domain Name
If the box where the site is on, remains the same, all you have to do is change the folder-name to reflect the correct domain, and change the config.php correspondingly....

Hi Ronnie
It isn't my server. I have a reseller account on a shared server (WHS). Is this what you mean?
Unfortunately I am not too familiar with how this all works, so I apologise for being clueless.
Cheers

Re: Can I change Domain Name
I mean, when the data will remain on the same machine, after the domain-name is known, then only some paths should be renamed. If the domain is to be transferred to another machine, f.e. because the new domain is hosted elsewhere, then you have to transfer the files + database....
I have on my box f.e. test.domain.com, I can rename that folder to www.whatever.com and change the links in the config.php to state the same... So when you stay on the same machine, it is simply renaming the paths...

Or, you can develop and play around on a local server, on your PC.
If you're happy with the result, as RonnyK says, you really only need to tweak it for a new http location.

Re: Can I change Domain Name
Hi Dizzy,
Would you be intending to use the same hosting space throughout and just change the domain name that accesses it, or would your live version of the site be on a different hosting package altogether?
If you are going to decide as the developer of the site who the hosting company is, I recommend sorting out the hosting package now that you'll use for the live site and point your 'spare' domain to it. That will let you practice away until your main domain is decided.
Then you could change the DNS settings over so your final (real company) domain name points to your hosting space. That might save you some hassle in terms of moving sites, but it's really quite easy anyway, there's a link here:
