[solved] uploaded site to server, now 404 on some stuff

Post by ntmr »

So, after several aggravating and unsuccessful attempts to get the site on the internet and working correctly, I finally got the paths straight (thanks to the uploading the install directory trick). But now, when I navigate to the root of my CMS, my server throws up a 404. Same with trying index.php. I can access some static content, such as a CSS file and an image. But PHPs are only giving 404s. Accessing directories gives a blank page with code of:

Code: Select all

<!-- dummy index.html -->
Super annoyed at this. That site should be up!  :'(

P.S. Additional info: I zipped up my site, FTPed, and unzipped with cPanel. Database is good, I think. And... this one is weird... the Admin Console page looks different. And my login doesn't work.  ???

You're going to need to provide a bit more information to get a helpful answer.
aggravating and unsuccessful attempts to get the site on the internet and working correctly
Several attempts to install CMSMS? Fresh install, upgrade?
thanks to the uploading the install directory trick
What do you mean by the "install directory trick"?
I zipped up my site, FTPed, and unzipped with cPanel
Was this a previous CMSMS site? Can you describe what you mean by "zipped up my site"?

You are going to find some very helpful folks around here. However, until you provide more information about what you are doing, and how you are doing it (and can demonstrate due diligence in attempting to rectify on your own), you are unlikely to get answer from those most capable of doing so.

I would strongly suggest you take a look at this post regarding obtaining help. http://forum.cmsmadesimple.org/index.ph ... 661.0.html

Look forward to your next post so we can help you resolve your issue.

matterhornpat, you are quite right.

I apologize for the lack of information. I was frustrated, but that doesn't excuse my vague manner of posting. I know how these things go on forums.  ;)

As a matter of fact, I just got it fixed. It turned out to be that either something happened to my database or I never imported the data - I just imported it, and boom! there was my site. I was looking in phpMyAdmin while setting up a new test CMSms install on the server when I noticed the database for my original production install had no tables. Bingo!

But, for sake of history, here's what happened before:

I made several attempts at uploading and getting my site working. What I did was export my database and zip up my CMSms files. The database I imported with phpMyAdmin and unzipped the files with cPanel file manager. And then I did a couple fresh creations of CMSms locally and repopulated them with content, templates, etc, and tried uploading those. But failed.

The install directory trick is something I saw mentioned elsewhere on the forum where it was suggested to upload the install directory from the CMSms release to the server and somewhat reinstall CMSms to get the paths in config.php correct. Which I tried and actually found correct paths with. But there was a database problem, too.

I think the first time I uploaded the site, I actually got things correct, but I hadn't cleared my cache before uploading, so that made some issues, it seems.

Heh, I think I changed it while you were posting. If you'll take a look, you'll see that you have [solved] in the subject line of your post.  ;D
