Big problem with IE6 & others

I thought a site I made was working fine until I started getting complaints.

I checked using this  http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/index.php

And in anything before IE7 it looks like ka-ka.... Actually just checked using 7.0 and it doesn't look right either. Oh boy am I in trouble...

HOW DO I FIX IT? What did I do wrong?

Any suggestions most gratefully and humbly received.
