Tagging of content

Post by dusoft »

Because of special meaning of word "tag" in CMSMS it is very difficult to find information about tags linked to some content.
I mean, I didn't find a way or module to tag content in CMSMS, e.g. news articles. Tags like we use on sites like YouTube, Last.fm, Flickr, etc. Only module I found is tagcloud but it does different thing.

I also need tags to be site-wide, so I can add tags to different content, like news articles and pictures in gallery, and gallery albums. If there is nothing like that yet, I'm ready to try to implement this but I need an advice on which way to go, how to make possible adding tags to any module, what is the best way to link tags to other modules table records.. Is it possible at all in current design.

Thanks in advance.

could there be much confusion on that? it's non-hierarchical organization...unless you're just being sarcastic  ;)

No I was being honest, if it is the same as yours there are 2 in the forge for this, one is a {tag} and another is a module, seems like they do what is needed...

My definitoin of tag is present in first message in this thread: "Tags like we use on sites like YouTube, Last.fm, Flickr, etc."

What I've found is a module TagAll. But I can't get it to work, looks like it is outdated. Another module I've found is simpletagging which is outdated also.

What is "{tag}"? Looks like it is a tag/plugin. But plugins do not have administrative interfaces. And I can't find function.tag.php in my plugins directory nor somethig similar here: http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/project/list/plugin?format=html&page=1

Did you search http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/project/list for tagcloud?...

If so you will see 2 returns, a {tag} and a module, and yes {tag} means something that goes in your plugins folder, you won't find function.tag.php in the core, they do have a Help that tells how to use them...

I don't youtube, flickr, etc. so tagging in that context means nothing to me...

Well I've looked at them but never upload to them...

and as unfortunately so often, one of these two projects has no files released yet:

http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/projects/tagclouds

since February 2008, it is in the Forgelist and no files, nothing

why are these empty, dead modules in the search results? Modules or Tags without any file should not be indexed..  :'(

You have to understand, Connie wants everything to work perfect, all modules to be coded the same way, all modules/tags or anything in the forge to be up to date and problem free, all lang. files, translations, to be present and accounted for...

But she never does anything about it, just complains every chance she gets...

I could not answer in time because I was banned from this forum, which is a very discutable situation

But my dear:
you think my pledge for quality is annoying and I am not doing anything at all?

This is very wrong and I do not know why you discriminate me in that way.

- When I notice unproductive situations I do that to show the need to better that
- I did a lot of translations
- I worked hard to find out how to integrate translations into the Translation Center because that is absolutely intransparent
- I gave a lot of hints how to fix problems in templates, CSS whatever

I feel discriminated because I remind the admins of their own quality standards / CMSMS quality standards and you must admit that the quality management is very poor in the moment, which is in contradiction to the quality of the program itself

I am so actively asking for ways to manage the quality better because CMSMS is such a good product

I absolutely object your discriminating posting that I am not contributing anything

Sorry but it seemed like you were getting down on the admin for modules they had/have no control over, yes they could remove some of the dead modules from the forge, I even have one I started in 2006 then someone else came out with a better one and I never released any files for it and would like them to remove it, but iirc it would take some major rewriting of the system over there...

This is an open source project and if someone wants to write crappy code in their module and release it to everyone so be it but the core itself is about the only thing the admins are responsible for, if you find a problem in there by all means let them know...

You had come off pretty strong making it sound like you want them to go through every module in the forge and make sure they meet some kind of standards, with about 20 pages and 30 per page it ain't going to happen...

Hi,

My suggestion:

1)

place the tag cloud at a prominent place in the module start page, you see no tags at http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/project/list/module  where you start to search for extensions...

people start in the project list when they go => downloads =>modules

the project list (who ever clicked there from the modules-list?) shows a tag cloud with too many tags which give no real information

2)
limit the amount of tags so they behave like categories....

3)
show only modules in the module list which have files

is this not reasonable?

Now in the moment you only find the tags when you did click on a module name in the list, mostly you already clicked an empty or dead one... and then you see that there are tages, from the module list you rarely ever see these tags ;=)

I think this is reasonable, because it is just a question of usability and common sense...
