Nesting Templates?

Nesting Templates?

Is there any way to nest templates within templates?

Say for example I want to have a 2 column and a 3 column template available on my site for a customer to choose from when adding pages. Can I create a header template and a footer template in Layout->Templates and include these in the two and three column main templates?
I can probably do this with GCBs but it just feels messy not having templates and template parts in the same place. (Plus they wouldn't export correctly in the ThemeManager.)

Any Ideas?

Why not just do 2 templates?...
