question about file permsissions...

Is there any documentation on file permissions for the whole of cmsmadesimple?

I have recently changed servers and as such tar-zipped my whole site, backed up database etc and moved to the new server.

It seems that when I have moved everything it has effected permissions - I have already reset permissions on tmp, templates and other folders that are listed in the documentation for installing cms but I have a feeling other permissions may have been effected - also in modules, next to every module it says "change permissions" - is this normally present? Anyway, when I click that it does not work - it says:
"Couldn't change permissions on some files"

Any ideas?

Going to extensions > modules and seeing that next to them is no big deal, some servers have it some don't, I've never had it do anything I would expect it to do when hitting it, if your modules work it's all good...

New server, new system users ? Hence no system permissions bijection ?
