I honestly do not understand how you think this should be done. What if the website had 10 menus like you want, that would clutter the page list and how many of these custom menus should be allowed. One person may need one, the next will need 5 another will need 15.
If you want to avoid the GCB you can build a parent container in the page list and call it "custom menu" hide it from the menu. Then add pages that are of the Internal Page Link type and link to the pages you want listed in the menu. Then work some fancy magic with menu manager so only that section of your menu/page listing is displayed.

How about making a section header called left menu, that is set to not shown in menu, then all pages for the left side go under it and then for menu call...
