not all content types showing in menu

I've set the defaults to "show in menu" false and "active" false. I want this because I don't want pages showing up right away or showing up on the menu. However, when making content of type anything other than "content", it doesn't show up on the menu. Obviously because of the above. So I need to:
* change it to type "content"
* check "show in menu"
* save it
* change it back to "external link" or what ever
* save it

Maybe the "show in menu" can be on the other types as well since they are affected. I guess this is a feature request.
