So now, I am wondering, instead of uploading all of the content to both websites, would it be possible to have the websites share content by connecting to the same database?

I think that it's simple if (but you have double files):
- you have all relative links
- your sites can access to same DB (DB in remote address or your sites on same server)
the differences are for url/paths in config.php only

Don't do it.... it will cause problems.
and if you do do this, and run into problems, don't ask for support.

CMSMS does not support multisite installs.
