can I remove the copyright information / link in the footer?

Post by NewbieHere »

Hi everybody, :)

I will create websites with CMS made simple and want to sell all of them.

I have a question:

I will not remove the information in the code:

"CMS made simple:
A simple and effective way of managing content of primarily static sites. Before
URL:        http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/"

===> But can I remove this here (information / link to CMS made simple in the footer):

"CMS made simple is Free software under the GNU/GPL license. This site is currently running CMS Made Simple 1.5.4. "

Unless you are using any of the modules that I authored, in which case you are required by the license to keep a link to CMS Made Simple displayed prominently in the admin section.

removing this text is actually recommended for security reasons.  No need to broadcast what software version your site is running, whether it's WordPress or CMSMS or Typo3 or anything else.  If there's a known exploit for x version, it's like an open invitation to be hacked.

Although it might seem like a good gesture to let others know CMSMS is running your site, bad people will use the information for possible attacks. Al the very least, do not specify the version of CMSMS on your site. You might also want to do what I did: replace the information with a picture. See an example on my website, as well as how an attack looks like: http://mkrd.info/software-discussions/cms-made-simple.html
