DetailPage implementation - how does it work?

Hi

I'm writing a custom module for a client in which I want to support a detailpage parameter as in News, Calendar etc. - as well as the sort of SEO stuff calguy mentions at http://calguy1000.com/Blogs/4/60.html

However I don't understand how detail page is implemented. I can see how the page id is determined, and where this gets passed through CreateLink, but not how it affects which page gets used as the template. Is the detail parameter somehow built in?

I've searched the sources and forum with no success. Can someone explain?

I too would like to know how the detail page picks which template to use.

Currently I have a problem with the detail page showing a 404 in the page title.
