Custom News Pagination

On a corporate website for which I used CMSMS MLE (1.3), news postings are direct downloadlinks to PDFs. As I show 15 newsitems a page and the number of newsitems has grown to 200+ (and still grows on a regular basis), the default pagination of the news module now is at "page x of 19".
I would like to implement a different kind of pagination, something similar to google search results pagination:"1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 next" and "prev  3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 next".

Could this be done directly in a template&smarty or do I have alter the CMSMS code for the News Module?
And of course has somebody attempted something similar?

Just wondering if you figured out how to do this?  I'm looking for the same thing.
