CMSMS is trapping all my 404s

CMSMS is trapping all of my 404 errors, even though I'm using a "ErrorDocument 404 /error-404" in my .htaccess file.

I created a page named error-404 that I can access by typing in the URL, but if I type in a bad URL, CMSMS replies back with
Not Found

The requested URL was not found on this server.

From all the reading and searching I've done, Apache is supposed to superceed CMSMS if an ErrorDocument setting is used.

Any ideas?

Do you use internal pretty URLs ?
Do you use mod_rewrite pretty URLs ?
What is already in that ".htaccess" file ?
More info on your install : subdir or not ? etc
