Multiple Categories

Post by gecko »

Hi all,

I am new to CMSMS after trying Mambo/PHPWS and a few others - boy, is this a breath of fresh air - it's great.

I am using version 0.12.2.

I am building a site where I need articles in categories but where each article can be in more than one category (including child categories) for example:

An article about Watercolour Landscapes would be in the 'Watercolour' category and the 'Landscapes' category
or an article about Characterisation in Horror Fiction would be in the Characterisation category as well as the Genre:Horror category.

I have deduced that I probably need to use the news module as my article repository as such but I am stuck on the multiple categories part - I have carried out some research searching through the forums over the past couple of days and have discovered the ContentAlias module - does this work with  news? will it meet my needs for multiple categories? Am I on the right track? I don't expect it done for me but any help, pointers or guidance on the direction for me to investigate further would be appreciated muchly. Meanwhile I'll keep digging at it.

I also will need to be able to search within specific categories at some point but understand that work is underway on an improved search - so I am looking forward to that emerging.

Once again thanks to the devs for CMSMS - I can only see me using it more & more in the future.

Many thanks
Shaun

in the News Module there is an option to create child categories, you might be able to make Genre:Horror category with child categories  Characterisation  and others, then show the Genre:Horror category and it should list all the child categories, cliking one of those categories should take you to full view of everything in that category.... i've not tested this but it sounds good right...?  ;)

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the quick response - I'd more or less sussed the parent-child relationship - it's more the article being able to be in multiple categories I need help with - in that example how do I also show the article in the Characterisation category, if you see what I mean.

I've just installed ContentAlias so I'm just about to have a play with that but I'm not sure if works with the news module or just page content - will find out shortly.

Cheers

Hmm - doesn't look like contentaliases works with news - unless someone can correct me and tell me how? - its a shame - would have been perfect methinks.

I've just found the cataloger module - might be able to butcher that to do what I want.

I'm open to suggestions guys

had enough for tonight - going for a glass of wine - will get back to it tomorrow.

I've posted a feature request to allow news articles to be posted in multiple categories: http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/tracker/in ... 6&atid=104
Note: I don't have time to take on any more projects. I'm quite busy. I may be too busy to reply to emails or messages. Thanks for your understanding. :)

I've been looking for a way to do this as well. If anyone would like to pick up on this, that would make CMSMS nearly perfect!

Thanks for all the incredible work so far!

Hi guys,

That feature would be great on news - thanks Elijah - I wasn't aware of the feature request list - some interesting stuff in there - I have not got any further yet myself as I didn't finish work til late yesterday - so I am hoping to do a bit today.

I'd also like multiple categories for my blog: http://www.elijahlofgren.com/blog/

I've assigned the feature request to myself, and who knows? Maybe I'll somehow get around to it on Spring Break (in about a month).

Any news on this feature? Would be really nice to be able to assign one article to several categories...

Hello friends of the community, along with health, I want to comment on a topic on the categories of modules.

Many of the modules provides the option to select a category. In many cases the modules are not flexible to select multiple categories for the same content.

Example: The most typical case is the News module, in which we can only assign one category only.

Someone could give any comment or solution to this problem?

Greetings.
