FEUSERS - CANT USE EMAIL ADDRESS AS A USERNAME ??

I am experiencing a bit of an issue that I have run into. i have migrated a clients site to CMSMS and all works great. Ive used FEUsers for a members area where I have imported a list of username as email addresses and it worked perfectly for me.

Now when i go into the actual admin area of the site and manually add a new user, i enter the email address (coz that what i need to use as a username).....Bang, no luck, INVALID USERNAME

Is there any possibly way I can get by this, Ive looked in the forums and no luck.

I have found the table in the DB to be  cms_module_feusers_users > username, but I cannot see anything strange there,

can anyone help ??
