Is there a way to import a lot of images?

Hi all, I'm using CMSMS 1.5.1 base.

I need to import about 300-400 images organized into a number of folders into the CMS, so that the webmaster has access to use them as needed.  The image upload manager help page tells me to use FTP if I have a large number of images like this, but when I FTP the images into uploads/images, the image manager in the admin doesn't seem to recognize them.  I know that's the correct location, because I uploaded an image though the image manager as a test, and it went to that location.

Is there something else I should be doing?

make sure whatever folders you copied them to have the correct permissions (777).

Or zip/tar them, and use the FileManager to upload, checking the box, to unzip/untar after upload...
