[SOLVED] What is core.9684?

I have a couple of sites that have "core.xxxx" files in the public_html folder. On one site core.9684 is 52mb in size.
In the other I have core.19413 which is 53mb in size, core.25410 which is 4kb in size and core.25411 which is 0kb in size.  Both sites are version 1.4. from 1.2.3 to 1.3 and then to 1.4  

A  remaining 1.2.3 site which I have does not have these core files.

Does anyone know what these files are?  I reckon something is wrong

in short: just delete these files.

Of course.... other issues happening and only did the one (wrong) google search. Ta!
