[solved] HTTP/1.1 404 Object Not Found for index.php or install/index.php

Post by Benek »

Hello,

I'm trying to install v1.4.1 for the first time to a Linux/Apache server.

I've uploaded all of the files, set permissions, and created a new database.

Now, when I try to view the index.php file or /install/index.php I get "HTTP/1.1 404 Object Not Found." So of course I'm unable to proceed any further with the installation.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this? The file is obviously there. I can see it via FTP. I was told by the host that this plan supported the requirements, but maybe it doesn't?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. - I'm unable to find any error logs on server or in the support control panel. I'm not sure if I have the ability to view those or if they exist at all.

Try to put a simple test.html and call it from your browser

I've got an entire static html site still sitting in the root that will stay there as the active website for the domain until the CMS MS site is done being developed behind it.

So to answer you question, there are heaps of .html pages there and they all work fine.

Have you a .htaccess also?

No, I do not get a small ` sign on the top left. Just a very simply 404 error page that says exactly "HTTP/1.1 404 Object Not Found".

No, I do not have an .htaccess file. I tried putting one up thinking maybe it would help, but it disappeared once I uploaded it to the server so I have a suspicion they are not allowed by the host.

Or maybe you don't see this (.namefile are hidden file)
try with an other ftp client (Filezilla for example)

I've had no problem seeing .htaccess files in the past with this FTP client. Would it be the FTP client hiding the file, or could it be the web server that is hiding it?

But I think either way there wasn't one there before I installed CMS MS.

In this case you use FTP protocol, web server has nothing to do with this

Well I think I may have found out the problem. I had recently upgraded the hosting plan at the suggestion of the host so that it would meet the requirements of CMS MS.

I heard back from them saying this time that the plan they told me to move to doesn't actually support installing programs like a CMS. So they gave me false information the first time and it looks like I'll have to move host and try again.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers
