Install multiple versions of IE

Post by sn3p »

If you are webdesigner or webdeveloper you want your websites to work in most popular browsers.
For most browsers this is not a problem, but unfortunatly Microsoft decided you can't install multiple versions of IE on your machine. Thank god there is a program called Multiple IE which allows you to install multiple versions on the same machine!

The installer contains IE3 IE4.01 IE5 IE5.5 and IE6.
See the website for more info and download location.

be aware that this is not a great substitute for a real IE6 install... there are bugs, not all JavaScript is interpreted right... png fixes may seem like they are working when not... and not when are... over all it's a good start but for full time web designers or web developers, do your self a favor, go to a pawn shop buy a old $50 pc and use that... works better and you'll see your site run on a more real world IE example... but this all is based of many months of trying to get this working right with out buying the other pc... I had to learn the hard way... anyways that's my2cents... hope that helps

Actually, Multiple IE works rather well, but just on Windows XP. As I'm generally working on Vista, this won't work for me. But again, for WXP this package really works rather well indeed!

Just throwing in my 2 cents aswell ;).

Worked with Multiple IE's on 98/2000/XP for many years and it works 'exactly' the same as a normal install. There are some small issues, but that's mostly about resource sharing (MS never intended to run multiple IE installations).
So I wouldn't worry too much..

I use Virtual PC with IE7 and IE8, both the exact software, basically a full version of XP with the browsers installed, can run Firefox, IE6, IE7, IE8 all at the same time and VPC is free, and the stupid thing even wants to install updates...

I run a virtual machine for IE6 aswell (in Vista). The only thing that kind of pisses me off, is that when I am editing a page on a localhost, I can't see it in VPC, sadly.

I just thought that I be clear on why I said Multiple IE is not a good substitute for a pc with IE6 only... I installed Multiple IE on 5 pcs now over the last 4 or so years... and I've always encountered issues of one sort or another... This has been on XP pro SP2 mostly.  Buying a pc for someone that does one many-be two sites could be overkill but if your like me, I build too many sites to deal with "some small issues"... it was a cost thing... 5-10mins sorting issues a few times on new builds, over 4 years, @ your rate... could equal a brand new pc to boot...

This is a great start for those getting in to the game, but for the long haulers like me... buying that old pc is the cheapest course over time... if anything is gives you an idea on how you site performs on an old pc... still if Multiple IE became bulletproof I'd be all over it again... :)

But with IETester can you see when you are working on a localhost in Vista. It contains IE8 beta 1, IE7 IE 6 and IE5.5

I'm using it and i'm quite satisfied
