Building templates from scratch

Am I missing something? i'm looking for the information on how to build cmsmadesimple templates. I can't find anything anywhere on the site, just references to Smarty and CSS.

I can see that the templates are built up from code with a CSS style sheet, but there must be some information somewhere on the best way to do it.

I have also been looking for some basic alternative templates to download and modify, but I can't seem to find any. I would appreciate any advice.
