How to use Pretty URLS?

Hi,

I am trying to get Pretty URLS functioning with the mod_rewrite, where i meant to place the .htaccess file?? I am using a local copy of XAMPP on my machine by the way!!!

I had a lot of trouble using a .htaccess file in xampp as windows wants a .ext extension on the end of all files...

But it goes in the root, in this case it goes in the \xampp\htdocs\folderwithCMSMS
