Another name instead of HTML blobs, post your suggestions! Topic is solved

HTML blobs is a confusing term, that may take some time to understand because of it's vague name. Does anyone have a good suggestion of another name for what now is called HTML blob?

On IRC "Global Content Block" has been suggested.

As I understand, these are the basic uses of HTML blobs:

• In template, for global content. HTML blobs can be used similarly to content blocks if the HTML blob contains content that should be global, that is in a specific section on all pages that are using that template.
• As code snippets in template or on a particular page. That is, code that is not necessarily content. Basically to make the code for the template/page easier to read and instead have part of the code in a HTML blob.
• Content on a specific page. HTML blobs can be inserted into a specific page, for example to give a user access to change his/her own personal info in a HTML blob without having access to the rest of the page.

Any other ways to use what's now called a HTML blob?

What's the best term to describe this?

Post your suggestions and we'll see if a good term comes up that can replace what is now called HTML blobs!

How about template modules or template blocks?

This reinforces the fact that it's not really about content but more about extending templates.

Wiseleo, I think your suggestion on IRC: "Global Code Block", is also worth considering. This needs some thinking-through, so that we choose a name that actually says what it does too.

HTML blobs can also be used in individual pages, not necessarily only in templates. But I suppose the most common usage is as a "template block".

Anyway, it's too early for any thinking here...

I'd personally go for "Code snippets". Perhaps we should have a poll with a few options to vote on.

Code snippets are used in Etomite as a name for user defined tags.  It's their "claim to fame".  I don't want to go there.

What a great idea. I've never even dabbled with the HTML Blobs because I had no idea what they were or how they worked. I just wish I knew about them before I wrote all those custom tags. 

A few suggestions off the top:

• AntiContent
• UnContent
• DisContent
• Incontinent
• CustomCode

Personally I think Code Blocks kind of says it all though.

Which kind of raises an interesting point. What are the key differences between content blocks, blobs and (custom)tags. Do the last two differ in that they can handle server-side code.

Thanks for that explanation The blobs had been bothering me for a while as I couldn't really see the purpose for them. What they really are, according to your definition, is re-usable snippets.
