Do you know by now if there will be a more or less "easy" way to upgrade from an existing 1.2x site ?

And even more important, how about module compatibility?

The reason of my question is at the moment I'm planning to develop a site which also would require the development of a number of own custom specific modules. Will they be mostly compatible to 2.0 or will there be major changes regarding modules working for 1.2x ?

every few weeks, i download that svn.. just to see how things are going.

so with all that great 2.0 dev work going on, i was wondering if the new version will have language packs? whereas you can download all the languages for the core or applicable modules that you have installed.

where all my sites are english speaking, i dont really see a point for having all those extra language files.

anyway, keep up the great work! cant wait for the beta :P

Yes, there will be a way to upgrade a "default" CMSms install (with default supplied modules).

Current modules from 1.2.4 wount be compatible with V 2. Not sure if there will come a "compatibility mode".

This has already been mentioned, and I think the last comment on that was that modules would be compatible, just wouldn't use the full potential of new V2 API. But I'm not involved in development of cmsms, so I can't say whether this still applies.

There will be an upgrade script.  It will, however, concentrate on upgrading the content of the site to work in the new schema, and probably throw out most things that deal with users, groups and permissions..  The changes to those things are just too vast to even try to come up with a solution that will please everyone.

We're talking about making a module compatibility layer.  But, things that stray too far from the API and hit the core directly will probably have issues.  Not to mention any modules using features we're not going to really support anymore.  We'll look more into that after 2.0 is in beta mode.

This is what I'm working on right now.  The main idea is that the English strings will go directly in the code (so no english language files) and then translations for those full strings.  They'll be handled through a new translation center rewrite and have a translation center (like module manager) that will allow downloading up-to-date language files as they're available.  The language files in the default installation won't happen anymore, so it should make the download smaller.

The details are still a bit sketchy, but I'll know more soon as I continue playing with it.

In terms of users in frontendusers, do you think there will be a way to preserve these users through the upgrade, or a way to export the users from the old frontendusers and then import them into the new frontendusers... or whatever replaces frontendusers? Or are you just talking about users in the base install of cmsms? I guess I'm a little confused on the users being dumped.

That's definitely going to be a separate issue for calguy to look into.  Since the concept of FEU is going to be in the core now, then I guess that situation is going to arise for people.

But, when I meant users, I meant it from what comes with the core now.  People who can log into the admin panel and change content/etc.

Wee!! Can't wait for 2.0!!! Can any of the devs give at least a rough date on when this can possibly come out?

will CMSms 2.0 also come out with a new default frontend layout? That would be really great!

http://themes.cmsmadesimple.org/Share_a_Theme.html is a way to participate on this "new default frontend layout".

Are there ways to ensure that new 1.x modules will be compatible with 2.x? I'm considering re-developing a custom application as a module for CMS-MS. Of course, my timeframe is now, not in a few months or years when 2.x comes out. So, I would have to do this work as a 1.x module. Throwing away everything I have now to redevelop the app for 1.x will be a big enough hurt.  I don't want to end up throwing it all away again if I can avoid it.

Thanks,
Tim

I just wanted to announce that I will be creating a number of (unique, professional) standard templates for CMSMS 2.0, as I want to sponsor the CMSMS project by doing this.

Hope you'll be enthousiastic about them when they come out!
