Help with the homepage

Post by lemkepf »

Hello all, and thank you for such an easy to use CMS! I've been through joomla, drupal, xoops, and others... CMSMS is by far the easiest to use. (not to mention the use of Divs instead of Table tags... :) )

Now... my failing's on the other CMS's all related to the homepage. I could never get my homepage to work the way i wanted. So i'm posing this question now before i get too far into developing my site with CMSms.

I want my site to act like my design: http://diedforme.modevia.com/homepage.htm

I have the menu the way i want, and pretty much all my other requirements, except the frontpage.

I want to have the "default" homepage be the "focus" article. I want the "welcome" to be just a different article somewhere in a different category. I know that i'm going to be using 2 different templates to get the different layout, but how can i get 2 articles on the homepage?

I heard something about HTMlblobs that i could use for the "welcome" text as that never really changes. But how do i had the "read more" to get to the actual content of it? (something like this: http://forum.cmsmadesimple.org/index.ph ... ml#msg9137 ?) Any help is appreciated!!!

If you're using a different template for the front page, you can use multiple content blocks.

1. Make new template.  Put {content} and also {content block='2ndblock'}.
2. Make front page.  Set template to your newly created template.  When you do that, the page will refresh and you'll have 2 content boxes to fill in.

Glad you're enjoying CMSMS!

Your joking??? That's awesome!!! That totally rocks! :)

Now.... Is there a  way to do the whole "Read more" thing? like only putting the first thing paragraph in the content, and then link to the rest?

Or... with that "read more" thing would i have to just put the first paragraph of my longer article in, then a link at the end, linking to the longer article?

Yeah, News is the only thing that will do this, or a custom content type would have to created.

OK, i'll give that a try.... my other solution is just to put the "read more" link the the article itself and just link to the content page. It's the only page i'm doing it on. I'll look at that news thing and see if it'll work.

Another question. On my template i have those 2 content areas. ({content} and also {content block='2ndblock'}.) I know i can get the title of the page by using the "{title}" tag. Is there a way to assign a title to each of the content areas? Once again... this is only an issue with the homepage.

Definintely not.  It would be kind of neat if you you could do a one liner content block for those situations.  It's been brought up before, but it's not high enough in the queue of stuff that needs to be done at the moment.
