News and Categories

Post by perl4ever »

I've created a series of categories for the News module.

I created a couple of news items.  One in each category...

When I try to create a new NEWS page, and set the category to the Category name, for some strange reason, the PAGE (arrived at via the menu off of the main page of the public site) shows ALL news items, even though I specified to only show the one category.

What am I missing??

There were some bugs in the News module.  Patricia basically sorted it out in this post: http://forum.cmsmadesimple.org/index.ph ... 609.0.html

I had read that - but I am not sure how it would apply directly to creating a new page, and selecting the type of content as "News" - there is no way to manually code that, when following this path to creating a new page.  If I were to select "content" as the content type, then I could manually create such a page, I guess.  But, then, why have the option when creating new pages, of the type "News" ?

Hi Wishy,

I'm having the same issue that mr. perl4ever is having. His last post was a bit confusing...

When you use the 'content type' method to create a news page (content > pages > add new page), and then specify a category, the resulting page still returns all news items and doesn't return only items from the specified category.

Any idea what might be happening?

This isn't the case when you use the module tag approach, and add your category filter that way, it works fine. I suppose one could just use this approach rather than the page type approach, but it's kind of messy that you have the option to use both, yet one doesn't really work.

Thanks for all your work -- this CMS is a God-send!

Cheers,

Wil.

Hi wishy,

I'm still having the same problem after upgrading to 0.10.3 and News 2.0.

I have a main category called News and several subcategories as follows:

News
- Conference
- International
- Education
- Publications
- Research

There are NO news items with the Category of News. ALL the news items have been relegated to their appropriate subcategories.

On my homepage I want to display ALL News. So I use:

{cms_module module="news" category="news" number="8"}

And nothing shows up. Similarly in the News interface, nothing shows up in the Articles view if I select News and click Select Category.

Have I farked up or was the system not intended to work like this?

How can I display all subcategory news items of a parent?

Please, please help...I'm so close here I can smell it. :)

Nope. you've farked up nothing.  Both of these issues are bugs that were fixed in svn.  If you guys would like, I could package up just a News update to hold you over until 0.11 comes out.  Or, you'll be able to grab the News from the upcoming 0.11beta3, which is probably due out tonight (as in 12-16 hours from now).

Excellent.  Thanks for that.  I think beta3 will be out in a little bit, but that's just as good.  :)

Thanks, wishy. I was going farking crazy there! [Excuse my Australian.] Buuuuurp!!

[edit] Scratch that. Just downloaded the beta and uploaded News module to site. Same problem persists.

Do I need to replace any other files? Could calling a parent category News cause any problems (apart from confusing people)?

And you're using category='News*'?

[cough cough splutter mutter fark] Oh...yes. I am now. :-}

So it now works nicely in the site view but the module interface still doesn't show the children? I can live that.

Now to cause more grief by seeing if I can limit the summary length and get the 'more' text happening. :)

No. In Categories, yes. But in the Article view, if I select a parent category from the Cateogry selectbox and click Select Category, all child articles disappear and I'm left with an empty window.

I can't see how I can apply an * to that and fix it easily. ;)

You and your need for completeness.  :)

How's about this?  I'll add a checkbox that says "Show Category Children" next to (well, maybe under) the dropdown.
