This has been discussed before, so if you search the archives, you may find a more complete answer.

My understanding is that the GPL license allows you to make pretty much any changes to the code, as long as you don't try to take credit for the project.

Courtesy would say that you leave the "Powered by CMSMS" or some other form of credit on each page or at least somewhere in your site.  Lots of people have given lots of time and effort to this project, and to strip out all recognition just isn't nice, even if it's technically allowed by the GPL.

I've changed my footer to reflect that the content is copyrighted by my company.  However, I have no problem crediting the authors of CMSMS for the cms application.
