my first experience with CMSMS - using news as event/training handler

Hi everyone,
I am impressed by CMSMS since it seems to be quite powerful from what I could see so far.
Have a look at the first site I created at http://www.akademie81.de
It might not be too particular, but I managed to leverage the news module in two ways
a) as news delivering mechanism on the home page
b) as mechanism to show events/training/seminars filtered by category in the left side bar depending on which sub-menu of the menu "Angebote & Termine" you chose.
Let me know what you think about that and whether there would have been a much better way to do it.
Since I am new to web development and style sheets I had to fight a little with the cross-browser compatibility.
Any recommendations on how to cover all these variants most efficiently during development and test?
Thanks...Martin
