Private site (I'm afraid it can sound like a stupid question)

Hi there,
Could sound a stupid question to use a CMS to hide contents to people, but...
I wonder if there's a way to make a private site with CMSMS, that's mean only visible for members.
Yahoo, Google and MSN groups allow members restrictions and so would I do : create a member for novels authoring, only visible for all the authors and not for public.
CMSMS could be the PERFECT collaborative Writing tools if that could be done.
Authors would all be members (with redactor rights) and any author could read (and modify) pages, but nodody more could see contents,
Does anybody knows if it's a way ?
Tks
