Why doesn't template apply after change in global settings?

Am I misunderstanding how templates work?

I go into global settings and pick one of the 5 base templates installed with the package (different from the one I see when I log in right now).  When I successfully submit the change to the template in global settings, it has no effect on what I see when I first come into the CMS site.

I've tried clearing cache (server from global settings and browser).  No change.  Same page default install page shows up.

Thanks for your help.

Global Settings templates are only for 404 error pages and such...

If you want to change the look of every page, all use the same template, go to Layout » Templates and choose a default template...

If you want to change just one pages template click the name of the page in Content » Pages and choose a template from the Template: drop down...

OK.  Installed a quick copy of Granny's LAMP (http://canned-os.blogspot.com/2006/10/g ... h-for.html) so if I screw up anything, it's just a matter of unzipping a new "install" (vmware image).

The whole thing boiled down to being gunshy of the "apply to all pages" button after selecting "default".

Thanks for pointing me back in the right direction.

BTW:  If I wanted to add this specific set of steps to the manual, can I do that?  I know that asking means I'm probably dangerous enough the answer is "no" but I thought it was an important detail which I simply couldn't find in the manual anywhere. The "set all pages" button sounds drastic enough that, unless you have a site which can be re-setup in a matter of 10 minutes (et. al. you "don't care") then it doesn't get pushed!

You can push the "apply to all pages" button as many times as you want to change the default for all pages, all it will do is set the template for all pages if one looks weird just open that page for edit and change it back under Template:...

If you are concerned about messing the site up and want a way to roll it back you can use the Database Back up module there is a revised edition I've made work for 1.0 and newer ver. here http://forum.cmsmadesimple.org/index.ph ... 208.0.html

I install it on new setups and run it after I have all the modules I'll use on a site then if anything gets messed up I reset and go...

To add to the wiki/Handbook login with your forum name/pass. and your good to go...
