A note about the Installation Guide

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned here before as I am new to CMS made simple. I installed the site today and the installation couldn't have been easier. Very nice install wizard.

I just wanted to bring something to your attention concerning your Quick Install guide under documentation on your site. "User Handbook/Installation/Quick Install". Under the "Quick Install via FTP", Step 12 tells you to remove the /install directory. Step 13 tells you to read the first page carefully. If you read the first paragraph of the first page of the new site, it says
Congratulations! You now have a fully functional installation of CMS Made Simple and you are almost ready to start building your site. First thing though, you should click here to check if your site requires a database upgrade. After you have confirmed you are up to date, then we can get cracking on the site development!
If you click on "here" link as it suggests in the first paragraph, it tries to take you to the /install directory which you removed in Step 12. At that point, you need to re-FTP the /install directory back up to your site to run the update.

Removing the /install directory step needs to come after the step telling you to read the first page of the new web site.

That is all... If this has been posted before, just ignore me  ;) I did a quick search but didn't find any reference to it and thought you might want to know.

Thanks for a great CMS.

TJC

edit: Step 12 also instructs you to chmod the config.php file to 444, making it not writeable. This will also mess up the update process. Step 12 and Step 13 ought to be reversed.

You were right - the instructions are a little bit missleadingly.

But a fresh installation does not need an upgrade  :).

Very true.. but doing the paint-by-the-numbers install to make sure you don't miss or overlook anything.. the numbers here are out of order  :).

Other than that, so far so good. I really love the install wizard and the "tour" through the content that CMS made simple give you. Very nicely done.

The default homepage content should red-warn if the install directory is still there and not erased-removed from step 12.
Or does is already ?

Since I was following the steps in the guide, I removed the /install directory at Step 12. Therefore, when I did go to the site's first page I wouldn't get the warning about the /install directory still being there. Then, when I read the first paragraph and it said click "here" to see if you need an update, I clicked "here". Then it failed telling me the /install directory was removed.

I follow your point.

If I had not removed the /install directory in Step 12 and the first page warned me to do so in a RED warning statement, I might have removed it right then as well. Next I would read paragraph one, click "help" and fail once again.

My only point, and I know it's just being overly picky, is; the instruction to click "here" for the update needs to be written before ANY instruction to tell you to delete the /install directory or the redirect will fail. :-\

You have the rights to change the install instructions, go back to the page and login using your forum name/password...

Exactly, the CMSMS documentation is a wiki which means anyone registered on the forums can edit it.

Anything you can do to improve the documentation would be greatly appreciated.  ;D
