I seem to recall in the version descriptions that there was information about upgrade paths by version. What I mean by that is the newest version number that can be targeted as an upgrade for any running version. Does this exist and I missed it?

I've inherited a site running 2.2.7

That was more of a 1.x concern. Currently with 2.x you can generally go straight to the final version, unless there are specific module/php version conflicts that need to be addressed (not very common).

This may change with major version updates.
