using cmsms after lang time

Hi,
I'm an old user that din't work with a resent version of CMSMS in 2 years.
Some of my older CMSMS websites will be needing an update since from time to time hostingproviders disable older php version.
whyle i was working with other stuff, a lot has happend.
I learned Callguy has left the building and i see that his modules aren't realy maintained.
that brings me to some questions like:
What is the current way to detect the root parent of a page?
before I used a CG module for that.
it is quite important since i make a lot of multilingual websites and if the parent root was "domain.com/en" i set the cms language to english and loaded in the english variables, header and footer.
The same for each other language.
Is there a replacement for CGSmarImage
i used to use this module extensively to resize user uploaded images, very handy!
Alternatives for CG betterforms?
I know, i'm pushing it with a lot of questions for 1 post. so i'll stop here
But i will appreciate the kickstarter replies.
