Install fails at step 7 --- internal error 705 [solved]

UPDATE: When I restarted the install script from the beginning, I didn't encountered the error the second time through, and the installation appears to have been successful.
-----------------------------
I'm attempting a fresh install on a new Amazon EC2 instance running Ubuntu 20.04. I got through the first six steps, including verifying PHP extensions etc.. The only test that didn't pass was being able to initiate an outbound HTTP connection, but I had the impression that wouldn't prevent a successful installation and was going to look at that later.
The process failed in step 7 with the following:
Creating a new CMSMS 2.2.15 website
Step 7 - Install Application Files
Installation Directory:
/var/www/html/CMS
Sorry, something has gone wrong... (internal error) (705)
I cannot find any information as to what this means or how to fix it.
