My customer uses GoDaddy, and I was able to upgrade from 1.12.2 to 2.1.6, but when I try to load the upgrade for 2.2.x I get
Fatal Error
Sorry, putenv does not work on this system, and your system temporary directory is not set properly.
Any suggestions (besides switch hosts) would be appreciated.

First check if Safe Mode is enabled in your hosting environment. If so and if possible to disable it do so.
https://docs.cmsmadesimple.org/installa ... quirements
Safe mode turned OFF. CMS Made Simple does not support safe mode. Though it is possible to install and use CMS Made Simple with a host that uses safe mode, we will not support it. If you do install CMS Made Simple in a safe mode environment, you need to take careful and exhaustive effort to ensure that any problem you are encountering are not related to safe mode restrictions before posting any message on the forum.
Please post system information of CMS Made Simple:

I seem to recall having a similar issue for a GoDaddy client. I had them contact GoDaddy and ask to be upgraded to a newer cPanel hosting package. It was the same price, but had newer features like PHP 7.x, and it solved all sorts of strange issues with upgrades.
