FEU: Username with non english characters doesn't validate

I have upgraded an old site (CMSMS 1.7.1) with FrontEndUsers (1.10.1) to newest version (CMSMS 2.2.5 & FEU 2.8.1) and now the username doesn't validate anymore if it contains non english characters (Danish).
So there can't be created new users or existing users can't be edited.
I've filed a bug report in the Forge, but does someone have a suggestion for a temporary workaround, so the users can gain access to their records?
