Fatal Error On Install/Upgrade/Refresh

CMS Made Simple™ 2.2.3.1 “Happy Adventure”
Basically looking for some advice, I have been working with CMSMS for years and never come up against a problem like this.
I have just gone live witha website, it's all working fine, except Microtiny and TinyMCE have no WYSIWYG on them and they look like plain text/html.
So I though, I know what'll fix that, let's do a refresh of the CMS. So I uploaded the files and went to http://www.mydomain.com/cmsms/ to do the refresh install function, and I got this back:
Fatal Error
unable to write file /var/lib/php/session/m74dd0786a6b77dc7f1270c1b7098ebbc/templates_c/wrt59cceddd549bb
So I have now tried changing the PHP versions to PHP 5.5 and 5.6 and I'm getting exactly the same message. All permisions are set to 755 for the directories and 644 for the files.
I tried just to see what would happen to install CMSMS in another folder within the http://www.mydomain.com/cmsms/... so like this: http://www.mydomain.com/cmsms/subfolder/
And oddly I was able to then install the system within http://www.mydomain.com/cmsms/, but I could not see above the /cmsms/ directory to put it directly in to the http://www.mydomain.com URL, very odd.
