Hi

I've not tried using gmail as a relay but TLS might require port 465 (not 587). Also, you might need an 'app password' if you've enabled two-factor authentication on the account.

Specific error messages would help here - CMS debug and/or server logs and/or gmail (I wonder if they would even tell you if they'd blacklisted the ip due to, say, repeated auth-fail).

Can you telnet from the machine to gmail to test the connection? If you can't, try support at gmail and your host.

Or, the give-up option; is it viable to use the local machine to send the mail?

Try setting it to sendmail, no passwords needed etc. and use an email from the domain itself such as info @ site.com just make sure it is a real one which seems to work best for me in all sites I've set up...
