Down to 2: CMS and ModX

Hi All,

I am being honest when i say that I have narrowed my decision to my CMS of choice for some big projects I am involved with to 2: CMS Made Simple and ModX

Can you tell me is it possible with CMS (already/plugin/in development) to restrict users to creating/editing/deleting news/pages by section/categories?

I note that in the roadmap for 1.1 you mention  "Versioning/workflow" and  "Revision of the permissions model", can you expand on these please? ie can users be setup to approve pages/news items etc by other users before being published? Can users be assigned to have permissions related to page/news creation etc for specific areas of the site?

These features are extremely important for me in my projects (currently, ModX does not have this functionality, but say it can be done with a module/plugin)

If they are not available natively, does your framework allow the creation of such features by module/plugin?
if so, are there any developers for hire to work with me to create this functionality?

Cheers

Dean

Hi kiwi !

Thank you for your interest in CMSms. I understand your questions as users' rights management related to content. I'm not a power user, so please check the facts I'm writing here on a sample installation. Hopefully others will answer.

A°)There are already rights, designed to separate the roles of administrator (IT sysadmin), webdesigner (artwork and templating) and editor (content producer/manager). This works well according to my feeling : one can work without trashing another's work.

B°)At the bottom of the "page modification" interface, one can assign "additional editors" granted to modify the page. I have not tested it but I think it is near the core of your request.

C°)Good point to look at the roadmap. Workflow/approval requires versioning, as previously written in these forums. Theses features (versioning & wrkflw/approve) will hopefully be included natively before 2007, but I can't speak for the devs and free software is free software.

D°)There are many addons and modules. See http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/softwaremap/trove_list.php and the module manager in the control panel of your sample installation. You may have a look at News, Calendar, Front End Users, etc... You can write your own modules, there is documentation about this, but you can join existing module teams too.

E°)As I understand it, "Revision of the permissions model" should make the product closer to your needs. But I've not seen any 1.1beta yet.

Happy decision making !

Hi Peirre,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Much appreciated :)

I will see if any of the Dev team can jump in a shed more light on the 1.1 plans

Cheers

Dan

Bump... :)

Anybody able to shed some light on the permissions and workflow features for 1.1? Still available in Beta in early November?

Time is running out for my next big project, MODx is in the lead...but permissions on content creation and workflow could tip the balance

Any Dev's around?

Cheers

Dean

Sorry, I haven't been following the forums that much.  Life has been out of control lately.

Anyway, yes, the permissions model is going to get an overhaul for 1.1.  Calguy will probably be handling it.  Though, that November date for 1.1 isn't going to likely happen.  Both calguy and myself have been pushed pretty hard handling other extra curricular activities for most of October.

I've only done a few hours worth of 1.1 stuff and I think calguy has done about the same.

Good news is that I'm going to be back on 1.1 near the end of the week.  Of course, the bad news is that puts 1.1 pretty much 4-6 weeks behind what we initially intended.  Life in the free software game, I guess.

Anyways, if timelines are tight for you, then I guess ModX will have to be the right choice.  Noone's fault but our own.  Hopefully we'll be more on track for your next project.

Thanks!
Ted

Thanks for the reply Ted, much appreciated.

I will continue to monitor the progress of 1.1 and see what features make it into the release.

Cheers
