Problem with Gallery 2.0.2 and creating a new template

I recently updated to Gallery 2.0.2, then tried to create a new gallery template (for use in a Foundation 5 responsive framework).
When trying to load a gallery page using the new template, I got "failed to find file" error messages for gallery image files.
Looking at the web console output for the associated GET commands, I noticed that the error message displayed, for example %3c instead of the "<" character, and %20 for a blank space.
The changelog for Gallery 2.0.2 shows that work was done on the XML encoding for new templates, and I'm wondering if there is a problem with this.
Removing Gallery 2.0.2 and replacing it with Gallery 2.0 solves this issue.
