Thoughts on building online entry site

I am a member of regional organization and recently our hosting provider shut down. It's been a bit confusing but it turns out they owned everything, including the domain name. The whole thing reeks, but whatever...

So we are starting fresh.. and in a hurry too! So i need some advice on creating an online entry system for tournaments. I can build the rest of the site myself, but i was wondering if anyone has any experience in doing something like that and if so, which modules did you use?

Ideally, a person entering would also be able to pay for the entry. So i'm immediately thinking shop... but i'm not sure if how you would set it up to look like an online entry. You would also need to provide all the relevant detail for the entry, but that should be simple to capture.

Any ideas?
