Where is the Smarty error log? CMSMS 1.11.11

Apologies if this in answered elsewhere. I did look.
In had a syntax error in a stylesheet. I omitted the '$' in a variable expansion i.e [[colour]].
I did get an error in the admin log "Smarty Compile process failed, unable to write cache file" In fact, the cache file was written but was empty.
Where are syntax error and like like displayed? I looked in php_error.log, Apache error.log. I'm on Windows 7 Wamp.
