How to use Template Externalizer ?

Hi there,
I seem to be getting lost with template externalizer: I've installed the module, turned on developer mode, specified cache dir etc ... but it doesnt seem to be working. I mean am I supposed to upload my source file to this cahe dir, am I supposed to be editing from the cache dir (if so how do I get the template into there...), I know it's probably very simple but I'm just not getting it.
