Is there a general manual for version-upgrading?

I have to upgrade my site from version 1.1
I never did something before.
I have downloaded all the files between 1.1 and 1.6.6 (which seems to solve my problem).
I don't dare to copy the files of a newer version over my existing files.
But mayby this is the regular way.
So, my question: Where can I find an basic text about "howto upgrade"?
Thanks for helping me at my start in this world,
Fred Prins

Dear Jos,
Thank you for your reply.
I cannot find an answer on my question on the pages 'upgrading old-versions'. My question is: can I copy (with FileZilla) the files of a newer version over the older files without loosing (content of) my website.
I know that the content of my website is stored in a database, but some information is stored in files (*.php, *.ini, *.css etc.).
I am afraid to lose this content and in this way to lose my site.
I have never made an upgrade before, so my question is probably very simple.
What do I have to do with the files of a newer version?
Curious,
Fred Prins

Make sure you have a backup of all files as well as database!

Copy the files that come with the newer version to the server overwriting the old files. That should be no problem. UNLESS you've changed core files which is not supported.
