Anyone heard of this hacker, or had the misfortune to be a victim?

Afraid so, probably. This was a site created back in 2011. In fact, this is the second attack on sites created around that time. The first time he/she got in to the server but seemed to have left the CMS program alone.
This time, he/she may have attacked the server again (there are no backup copies there and I am sure there should be and the login details have now been changed since this morning), but has deleted all the content of the pages and heaven knows what else.
The two sites have a commonality in that they deal with the same type of business, date from around the same time, and have Coppermine galleries attached to them, which are edited by the same person.
Why pick on these two sites beats me. Coincidence?

that's why it's important to keep your cms and modules up-to-date and make backups.

Yes,I quite agree, in the perfect world and one where the hacker does not delete online backups!
However, the world moves on after a period of years and it is surely up to the site owner to arrange such things.

It's not a good idea to keep a website and it's backups on the same server. It's like making a backup of your harddisk on the same harddisk.
