Filemanager won't open files below uploads directory

I recently upgraded to CMSMS 1.11.7. Now Filemanager won't open directories within the uploads directory. Clicking a directory in uploads simply displays the contents of uploads again instead of the contents of the clicked directory.

Also, if I try to create a new directory on the Filemanager page, I get this message:
You are not allowed to modify files outside the uploads-dir! (That requires the Advanced File Management permission)
I am logged in as administrator, so I thought I should have permission.

There are no php errors.

There are no ! or X on the System Info page.

There are 36 warnings on the Firefox Error console but no errors. The warnings are all dropped declarations due to: "unknown property 'zoom', "error parsing value for 'filter'", "unknown property '-moz-border-radius-...'", and "unknown property 'vertical-alignment'". I can give you more details of these errors if you want to see them, but I wouldn't have thought these kinds of style warnings would prevent a page completely from displaying or give the error I get when I try to create a directory.

I also noticed that the uploads directory has permissions set at 777, but all subdirectories except images has permissions set at 755. Do I need to change the permission settings on all directories that are in uploads to 777?

This was all working fine for a couple years. This Filemanager problem first occcured last week when I upgraded from CMSMS 1.9.4.2 to CMSMS 1.10.3, and is still there now that I upgraded to CMSMS 1.11.7. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I apologize if I posted this problem in the wrong forum. I can't tell if Filemanager is a core module or if it is considered an add on.

under File Manager -- Settings tab, have you "Enable advanced mode?" ticked?

I just tried that. Now it defaults to going to the root directory instead of the uploads directory. And if I click the uploads directory it still just displays the same directory list again instead of showing me the contents of uploads. And I sill get the same error if I try to create a new directory.
